How Interac Cash works

The Interac Cash service allows you to withdraw cash from your account at an ABM. To begin a transaction, insert a valid Interac branded debit card into an ABM that displays the Interac logo and follow the prompts on the screen. Below are prompts you may see:

  • Enter the withdrawal amount
  • Select the account from which you wish to withdraw funds
  • Enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN)
  • Provide a final okay to confirm the request for cash withdrawal

At this point your request is passed through the Inter-Member Network where your card, PIN number and requested funds are verified by your financial institution. The Interac Cash service does not offer bill payments or deposits. ABMs belonging to your own financial institution may provide options such as bill payments or deposits. Each Interac Association member administers its own ABM network. If you have questions or concerns about an ABM transaction, you will need to contact your financial institution directly.

Automated Banking Machine fees

Interac Association does not charge any fees directly to customers and merchants.

However, financial institutions often charge a transaction fee for making a debit on your account. They may also charge you a fee when you use an ABM that is operated by another organization. You can learn more about types of fees here.

Contact your financial institution directly for information about the type of fees you pay for your bank account.

Surcharges

ABM owners or operators may impose a surcharge on customers that use their ABMs. An ABM surcharge fee is also known as a convenience fee.

As prescribed by a Consent Order issued by the Competition Tribunal, Interac Association may not restrict the levying of a surcharge.

If imposed, the surcharge amount must be properly disclosed to the customer, and the customer must be provided with the option of cancelling the transaction without cost if they do not wish to pay the surcharge. The amount of the surcharge is determined at the discretion of each ABM owner/operator. For more information about Fees, click here.
