Before you begin to make a contactless payment with Interac Debit, you’ll need:

  • A Canadian bank account with a participating financial institution
  • A debit card associated with your bank account, or a debit card provisioned in the digital wallet of your mobile phone or wearable device

Are contactless payments safe?

Security is important to us. Chip-enabled Interac Debit and contactless enabled cards are extremely secure and protected from fraud tactics such as skimming, duplicating and electronic pickpocketing.

When you make a payment, the only data transmitted consists of payment transaction codes, not confidential details about your bank account. Transactions occur in real time, so no information can be captured by criminals to conduct fraudulent transactions or commit identity theft.

Can I use my Interac Debit card in the United States?

Thanks to our collaboration with NYCE Payments Network, cross-border payments with a Canadian debit card is possible at selected retailers when you’re in the U.S., giving you all the benefits and security of Interac Debit, including cashback.
