Edmonton, December 8, 2025 – Interac Corp. (Interac) today announced the launch of Interac® Debit on Edmonton Transit Service, making it more convenient and frictionless for Edmonton region commuters to pay for their transit rides with a trusted payment option.
Starting today, transit riders in the Edmonton region can tap their physical Interac Debit card or use the mobile wallet version directly on an Arc validator to pay their fare without the need for cash, tickets or transit passes. This new payment option provides a seamless and secure way for both regular and occasional transit riders to get around the city of Edmonton and surrounding regions: Beaumont, Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, St. Albert, and Strathcona County.
“This launch marks a new and convenient way to pay for transit in Edmonton and the surrounding communities,” said Giles Sutherland, Head of Business Development, Commercial & Public Sector, Interac. “With Interac Debit, riders can tap and pay directly from their own bank accounts — a payment option that allowed Canadians to complete 55 million rides in the past year. It’s a simple, secure way to manage daily travel, stay in control of spending, and build good financial habits.”
As part of Edmonton’s Arc fare payment system, riders tapping with Interac Debit will pay the standard adult fare rate. When the same card or mobile wallet is used consistently, riders enjoy the same daily and monthly fare caps and transfer benefits as Arc cards – providing flexibility and cost savings. Interac Debit will also be available to those with fare concessions, including seniors, youth and individuals experiencing low income. To receive the discounted fare, eligible riders must first link their concession to their Interac Debit at myArc.ca. This integration supports Edmonton’s vision for modern, convenient transit payments while giving riders a trusted, secure way to pay directly from their bank accounts.
Edmonton joins a growing list of regions where Interac Debit is already available across Canada, including major transit networks in Toronto, Vancouver, and Ottawa, now spanning across 16 transit authorities. Interac data shows Canadians are choosing the convenience and trust of Interac Debit at the fare gate, and adoption continues to accelerate:
- 55 million transit rides in the past year using Interac® Debit
- 684,000 unique cardholders are tapping on transit every month
- 29 per cent year-over-year surge in active monthly users
