What is your name and job?
Bryan Bossin – Director, Government Relations & Public Affairs at Interac
What does a typical day at Interac look like for you?
A typical day at Interac for me involves a range of activities from managing outreach to government departments to developing communications strategies on a variety of Interac priorities such as Digital ID and Transit. I try to balance my time between meetings and daily email management with creative thinking and writing. I also like to stay on top of current events and political news, with a view towards sharing any relevant information with contacts internally, so I try to carve out at least a bit of time in each day to keep up with reading.
As with so many others now, I’m balancing the requirements of family life and my two young daughters with work, so a typical day also involves a healthy dose of time spent playing in our backyard or overseeing various elaborate art projects!
What is your favourite part of your job?
My favourite part of my job is the opportunity to bridge two areas that I am passionate about—communications and government relations—with the goal of showcasing the important role Interac plays in Canada. Interac is such a well known brand, and because our products and services are accessed by nearly all Canadians we have an opportunity to contribute not only to economic growth in our country but also to innovation, advancing new initiatives that will shape how Canadians transact and exchange value in the future.
What comes to mind when you think about your journey at Interac?
While I’m just shy of two years at Interac now, when I think of my journey here I am amazed at how much goes on within this company that I wasn’t aware of prior to joining. I did not come from a payments or financial sector background, so the ability to learn a new industry and subject matter has been both challenging and rewarding in equal measure.
Where would you like to see your career grow at Interac?
I’d like to see my career grow in a number of ways including continuous learning on the business of payments, embracing an expanded role for government relations as Interac strengthens key relationships and pursues new opportunities, as well as continuing to support the development of our business narratives and thought leadership pillars.
What is an interesting fact about you?
I’ve recently taken up gardening and this year committed to growing all my vegetables from seed. It’s been quite a humbling experience, but the results are well worth all the effort so far!
What makes Interac a unique place to work?
By its design and function, Interac is unique. Few domestic debit networks across the world have the level of adoption and usage as Interac does. At the same time, we are also a lean company relative to our market presence. This combination makes Interac a unique place to work. Because there is no shortage of interesting projects and workstreams underway, there are often significant opportunities to grow and learn new skills and contribute cross-functionally.
