Matthew Sgromo
Ex-Officio Member
He/Him | Toronto, Ontario
A proud member of the 1Interac team and an alumnus of the Interac internship program, I first joined Interac in 2023 as a Commercial Partnerships & Client Solutions Intern. After completing my studies, I returned full-time to the Client Strategy Team, where we enhance Customer Experience (CX), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and sales enablement strategies—ensuring client insights drive meaningful decisions.
I hold a Business Management degree from the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto Metropolitan University, majoring in International Business with minors in Finance and Marketing. My professional experience spans finance, technology, consulting, and athletics.
Beyond my professional experience, sports have been a defining part of my life and continue to shape who I am today. I grew up playing competitive hockey, which led me to become a referee. What started as a part-time job has evolved into a passion—I currently officiate at the U Sports and Junior A levels and hold an executive role in my local minor hockey association as the Head of Officiating Operations and Development. Refereeing has allowed me to give back to the sport while still competing a high level.
Outside of work and hockey, I have a deep passion for travel, and I am an avid sports fan. Exploring new places and cultures around the world has broadened my perspective, while my love for sports continues to fuel my drive for teamwork, leadership, and continuous growth.
Shreeya Patel
Co-Chair
She/Her | Markham, Ontario
I grew up in a household where money wasn’t a quiet topic. Budgeting, saving, and financial decisions were part of everyday dinner conversations, and that early exposure sparked my interest in how people make financial choices and how technology is reshaping the way we interact with money.
Now a second‑year business student at Western University, I’m building on that foundation through my academics. This summer, I’ll be interning at EY, with my eyes set on a long‑term career in management consulting. I’m excited to develop the skills and perspectives that will help me work across diverse industries and tackle meaningful problems.
Outside of school, I like to stay active on the tennis courts, binge podcasts (shoutout to Acquired), and experiment in the kitchen.
Being part of the Interac Youth Council is a chance to pull up a chair at a table where youth voices are often missing. I look forward to bringing a curious, grounded perspective to conversations about how financial tools can help young Canadians like myself feel informed, confident, and included.

Yasin Mir
He/Him | Surrey, British Columbia
I am a second-generation uninvited settler whose family comes from the Kashmir region of Pakistan. I live and learn on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Kwantlen, Semiahmoo, Tsawwassen, and Katzie peoples. I’m currently a second-year Bachelor of Science student at the University of British Columbia majoring in Integrated Sciences, where I’m integrating pharmacology, public health, and data science. Growing up in Surrey, a vibrant and diverse city where not everyone has equal access to resources, education, and opportunity, has profoundly shaped my worldview and how I see the systems around me. It’s also what sparked my interest in understanding how institutions, whether in healthcare, education, or finance, can better serve the people who rely on them.
Much of my work takes place in community spaces. I currently volunteer in multiple roles at Langley Memorial Hospital, where I work directly with patients and staff to support care experiences, collect patient experience feedback, and help individuals navigate the healthcare environment. Alongside healthcare, I’ve spent several years working with youth, ranging from pre-teens in the YMCA Y-Connect Youth Leadership Program to children in early childhood settings, which has strengthened my commitment to mentorship, community-building, and providing accessible support. I also serve as Outreach Director for The Immunity Project BC, a youth-led nonprofit focused on raising awareness and education around autoimmune diseases. In this capacity, I collaborate with labs, healthcare professionals, schools, and community organizations to facilitate educational initiatives and partnerships. Across these roles, I’ve developed a strong interest in advocacy, communication, and creating systems that respond to community needs.
I am particularly passionate about advocating for youth in the context of today’s affordability crisis. Many young people are attempting to plan their futures while facing rising housing costs, inflation, and increasing financial uncertainty. At the same time, social media and influencer culture often promote unrealistic narratives regarding money, success, and stability, which can further complicate and exacerbate financial decision-making.
Through the Interac Youth Council, I hope to contribute a youth-centric perspective to conversations about financial literacy, accessibility, and innovation. I look forward to collaborating with other youth leaders from across Canada to ensure that the voices of young people are effectively included in shaping the financial systems that we interact with on a daily basis.
