But should I?<\/p>\n<p>A customer I\u2019ve never met before wants to pay with a cheque. Is that a good idea?<\/p>\n<p>Do I really owe these fees?<\/p>\n<p>Is this a real invoice?<\/p>\n<p>Who is sending this message?<\/p>\n<p>Wait, is this text message really from the bank? What do I do?<\/p>\n<p>[Cacophony abruptly ends. Calmly:]<\/p>\n<p>What <em>do<\/em> you do? Stop. Calmly assess what\u2019s really going on \u2014 using your knowledge of what fraud looks like.<\/p>\n<p>This is From Dollar One by Interac, an audio series that supports entrepreneurs, freelancers and anyone with a side hustle as they grow their business \u2014 and make the most of the entrepreneur\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>(If this is your first time listening, welcome. Be sure to check out our previous chapters!)<\/p>\n<p>Here in Chapter 3, we\u2019re helping you learn how to take charge of fraud prevention and digital security for your business.<\/p>\n<p>We know this is a topic a lot of entrepreneurs don\u2019t always want to think about.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s not quite as exciting as meeting new customers and making money.<\/p>\n<p>But security is something you <em>have <\/em>to think about as an entrepreneur. Because fraudsters are getting more sophisticated all the time. And a successful scam could cause real headaches for your business.<\/p>\n<p>So when it comes to answering questions that kicked off this episode, you want to have answers \u2014 and the confidence that comes with knowing what to do.<\/p>\n<p>After all, you built your business. You want to protect it, right?<\/p>\n<p>Right. So let\u2019s start with some core advice for avoiding fraud that Interac suggests <em>all <\/em>Canadians should follow. It\u2019s the \u2018Stop, Scrutinize, Speak Up\u2019 approach. Think of it as the \u201cThree Ss\u201d \u2014 your basic steps that will help you out in a lot of situations \u2026 if you remember to follow them.<\/p>\n<p>What are the steps?<\/p>\n<p>Number one? <strong>Stop. <\/strong>Which means: When you encounter something that feels fishy \u2014 like an incoming request for personal or financial information \u2014 take a moment to stop, think, and follow your instincts. And it doesn\u2019t matter where the request comes from \u2014 a phone call, email, text message \u2014 don\u2019t do anything until \u2026<\/p>\n<p>You <strong>scrutinize<\/strong> the situation. That\u2019s step two. Look for the telltale signs of a scam \u2014 like an unusual request for money or information. When a message seems to be putting a lot of pressure on you to act quickly, that can be a sign of a scam too.<\/p>\n<p>Or mistakes, like a web address in an email that doesn\u2019t look like the official one. Once again, take the time to notice the details before you click on anything or respond to anything.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third, <\/strong>know when it\u2019s time to <strong>speak up. <\/strong>When you suspect a fraud attempt, contact the organization that\u2019s <em>supposedly <\/em>reaching out to you and verify what\u2019s going on for yourself.<\/p>\n<p>If you suspect you\u2019ve<em> already<\/em> been scammed, immediately reach out to your financial service provider through the number provided on their website. And report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre \u2014 that\u2019s a federal police agency that deals with fraud.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s enough for you to remember for now.
