These things happen, but we tend to be extra hard on ourselves when they do.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Welcome back to From Dollar One: presented by Interac. In this episode, we share tips from expert Financial Therapist, Aseel El-Baba, about t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">urning limiting, negative thoughts into positive opportunities for growth.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Negative thoughts are very real and when we let them run wild with negative self-talk, so do our brains\u2019 neural pathways.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In fact, in 2020, Queen\u2019s University researchers Dr. Jordan Poppenk and master&#8217;s student Julie Tseng found that the average person has about 6,200 thoughts per day.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">And while most of those thoughts aren\u2019t necessarily negative or positive, when exposed to negative stimuli (like a perceived failure) the brain reacts with a surge in neural activity.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In her article, How to Transcend Self-Doubt and Negative Self-Talk, clinical psychologist Leigh W. Jerome, states that \u201cwe naturally attach greater emphasis to adverse events such as insults, failures, unpleasant stimuli, and pessimistic scenarios.\u201d <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While some negative feelings can actually help us take a step back and reflect on our behaviours and decisions, negative self-talk can become chronic, and undermine a positive sense of self.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">A technique to help to shift your mindset in a kinder direction is to keep a reflection journal.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Write down your negative thoughts and list the facts that support them and the facts that don\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For example, say you just got some bad news that a business proposal you\u2019ve been working on for weeks was rejected. Let\u2019s work through how you can reflect on your present feelings and reframe them in a kinder, more productive way.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Start off by asking yourself: What am I right now?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">You might say: I a<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">m feeling like a failure\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0What evidence supports this thought?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The fact that my business proposal was rejected\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0What&#8217;s the outcome that I desire to achieve instead?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To acquire experience and wisdom from my most difficult challenges<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0What must I believe is true to get to this outcome instead?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I am capable of learning from failures\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I am determined to reach my goals<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I believe in my business idea\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I believe in myself<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What is an alternate thought that takes into account evidence for and against the original thought<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I am not a failure. I failed at one particular thing. I have a loyal base of customers that love my products. I believe in my business idea and am determined to reach my goals.
