(Interac) survey<\/a>. Based on a national online survey of 1,700 adult residents of Canada, conducted in February, the results make two things clear: First, Canadians are feeling worn down by the burden of fraud \u2014 perhaps more now than ever before. And second, they\u2019re still not sure what to do about the problem. This uncertainty brings the risk of identity theft and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/content\/life\/fraud-prevention-9-scams-for-canadians-to-avoid\/\">other serious consequences<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey also uncovered that even though Canadians seem to be taking steps to protect themselves from fraud, many are also engaging in risky digital behaviours which can expose personal data to identity fraud such as providing personal information through social media posts, gaming or entertainment apps, online marketplaces or through email that can be collected and used by fraudsters in scams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the highlights of what we learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-canadians-are-tired-of-fighting-fraud-attempts\"><strong>Canadians are tired of fighting fraud attempts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With more than half (53 per cent) of respondents reporting they experience at least one fraud attempt per week, it\u2019s not surprising Canadians are reporting a sense of frustration with the problem.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"853\" height=\"1024\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2022\/03\/Fraud_prevention_identity_theft_chart1-853x1024.png.webp\" alt=\"Infobox: Fraud fatigue: 86% of Canadians say they\u2019re tired of dealing with fraud attempts (+ more stats)\" class=\"wp-image-92187 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2022\/03\/Fraud_prevention_identity_theft_chart1-853x1024.png.webp 853w, https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2022\/03\/Fraud_prevention_identity_theft_chart1-250x300.png.webp 250w, https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2022\/03\/Fraud_prevention_identity_theft_chart1-768x922.png.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2022\/03\/Fraud_prevention_identity_theft_chart1.png.webp 1166w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 853px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 853\/1024;\" data-original-sizes=\"(max-width: 853px) 100vw, 853px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-canadians-data-security-habits-don-t-protect-against-identity-theft\"><strong>Canadians\u2019 data security habits don\u2019t protect against identity theft<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Education can play a critical part in fraud prevention. But as Interac <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/content\/news\/ninety-six-per-cent-of-canadians-failed-to-spot-fraud-when-put-to-the-test\/\">has reported in the past<\/a>, Canadians aren\u2019t practising the safe data security habits that would thwart fraud attempts and keep them safe from identity theft.
