Toronto, March 11, 2021 – Interac Corp. welcomes the <\/span>announcement by <\/span>Metrolinx<\/span> that contactless payments will be <\/span>added as a<\/span>n <\/span>option for transit riders<\/span>. Users of the UP Express<\/span> will be <\/span>the first to benefit from <\/span>th<\/span>is<\/span> new <\/span>payment <\/span>method<\/span>. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Starting this spring, <\/span>UP Express <\/span>riders<\/span> will be able to purchase transit fares by <\/span>using<\/span> a<\/span> contactless-enabled <\/span>Interac<\/span><\/i> Debit card<\/span> or mobile wallet. <\/span>Following the UP Express pilot, c<\/span>ontactless debit access will be extended to <\/span>more transit agencies in a phased manner<\/span>.\u202f<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The <\/span>addition <\/span>of contactless payment<\/span> options <\/span>is an important step towards a more seamless, mobile and convenient public transit experience,\u201d said<\/span> <\/span>Peter Maoloni, VP Product & Services, Interac Corp.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>When transit authorities add <\/span>Interac <\/span><\/i>Debit they are offering their riders a form of payment that almost 30 million Canadians already use<\/span> for day-to-day purchases.<\/span> <\/span>The inclusion of contactless payment options <\/span>can also help with<\/span> the responsible recovery of transit networks \u2013 and cities \u2013 from the COVID-19 pandemic.\u201d\u202f<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

When Interac <\/span>polled Canadians in 2020<\/span><\/a>, it found that nearly seven in ten (69 per cent) transit riders would be likely to use \u2018open\u2019 payments \u2013 i.e. contactless payment options which remove the need to purchase dedicated tickets and passes to ride. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Over half (55 per cent)<\/span> <\/span>of those surveyed <\/span>agreed that paying this way would reduce wait times for purchasing a ticket or pass. And 31<\/span> per cent<\/span> said <\/span>it is<\/span> financially challenging for them to pay for transit passes in advance<\/span>. W<\/span>ith <\/span>contactless<\/span> payments, <\/span>Canadians will have the option to pay <\/span>directly via their <\/span>debit card<\/span> or mobile wallet<\/span> without the need for <\/span>dedicated transit <\/span>passes<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Interac is working with transit authorities<\/span> and other mobility service providers<\/span> across Canada to enable contactless debit as a form of payment<\/span>, subject to <\/span>availability at participating financial institutions.
