2020 hasn\u2019t been the year we anticipated. Many of us learned how to work remotely for the first time, we celebrated milestones virtually, and found innovative ways to stay connected to friends, family, and colleagues. At <\/span>Interac<\/span>, this year also brought a lot of change and new opportunities. We saw tremendous growth across our digital payment solutions, <\/span>kept fraud levels low<\/span>, <\/span>and focused on building a resilient work culture to keep our networks running efficiently for <\/span>Canadians.<\/span> See below for some of the major highlights of 2020:<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Transitioned All Employees to WFH<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

At the beginning of March, we transitioned all 450 + of our employees to work from home and<\/span> put the safety and wellbeing of our staff at the forefront of every business decision to ensure they had the support they needed to keep our networks <\/span>running<\/span> smoothly. We took extensive measures to <\/span>help our team<\/span><\/a> balance their work and home lives, continued to keep them up-to-date on changing policies and procedures, and <\/span>provided<\/span> <\/span>one-time work-from-home allowance<\/span><\/a> to help them upgrade their workspace to promote comfort and workplace efficiency.<\/span> <\/span>W<\/span>e also had fun doing it! We hosted more than 10 virtual events including holiday festivities and our second annual Diversity Week<\/a><\/span> benefitting United Way<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Prioritized Diversity & Inclusion<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

The <\/span>Interac<\/span> D&I Program recognizes <\/span>eight dimensions<\/span><\/a> of demographic and cognitive diversity, which are implemented through <\/span>various<\/span> initiatives designed to embrace diversity as a strength, promote fair treatment, equal access to opportunities, and organizational flexibility. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

This year, we launched the <\/span>Equity and Empowerment <\/span>Initiative<\/span><\/a> (EEI) that seeks to combat racism and other forms of discrimination, both within our walls and outwards in our communities. We hosted open forums for staff members to share their life experiences and launched ten workstreams based on the outcomes of those forums to make <\/span>Interac<\/span> a more equitable workplace. <\/span>Interac<\/span> also<\/span> supported five organizations through this initiative including the <\/span>Black Business and Professional Association<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>CEE Centre for Young Black Professionals<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Pathways to Education<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Visions of Science<\/span><\/a>,  and <\/span>Tech Spark<\/span><\/a> \u2013 all of which are committed to empowering Black professionals and providing them the resources they need to reach their full potential.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Found new ways to support small business and our community<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

Since the <\/span>start of<\/span> the pandemic in Canada, businesses across the country have shown their resilience by pivoting in response<\/span> to <\/span>government restrictions and changing consumer <\/span>behaviours<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>To better s<\/span>erve their customers, ma<\/span>ny <\/span>quickly shifted to <\/span>digital payment tools such as<\/span> <\/span><\/i>Interac<\/span><\/i> e-Transfer. We expanded our digital offerings for small businesses, supported our small business partners, and focused our <\/span>marketing efforts<\/span><\/a> on encouraging Canadians to shop local. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to expanding our digital offerings and campaigning, we also <\/span>pivoted our<\/span> internal efforts <\/span>to <\/span>support small businesses throughout the pandemic. We launched a small business catalogue for our <\/span>Employee Appreciation Week<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Holiday celebrations<\/span><\/a> this year<\/span>,<\/span> investing more than $65,000 in local small businesses. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Smashed digital transaction records<\/span><\/b> and protected Canadians against fraud<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

The COVID-19 pandemic had an <\/span>immediate impact <\/span><\/a>on consumer <\/span>behaviour<\/span> in Canada. <\/span>Bulk<\/span> buying ensued almost immediately<\/span><\/a> before spending dipped due to the closure of non-essential businesses. Canadians transitioned to digital payment options, such as the <\/span>Interac<\/span><\/i> e-Transfer service<\/span>. <\/span>S<\/span>ince mid-March we\u2019ve seen a <\/span>69 per cent increase <\/span>in <\/span>Canadians<\/span><\/a> using the <\/span>Interac<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/i>e-Transfer platform at least twice a month, up from 42 per cent pre-pandemic. <\/span>Over 70 million <\/span>transactions<\/span> took place in October 2020 alone.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Interac<\/span> also <\/span>formed <\/span>27 <\/span>new <\/span>partnerships with companies such as <\/span>Dollarama<\/span> <\/span>to expand our <\/span>Interac<\/span><\/i> In-App\/In-Browser offerings so more Canadians can choose to pay with their own money. <\/span>More time at home and in-store shopping restrictions have forced Canadians to change habits almost overnight \u2014<\/span>more than half of Canadians<\/span><\/a> (53 per cent) report using digital payments such as <\/span>Interac<\/span><\/i> In-App\/In-Browser more frequently during the pandemic, and many said they\u2019ll continue to do so in future.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Even with the enormous growth of <\/span>digital transactions this year, we\u2019ve <\/span>worked tirelessly to keep our networks safe and secure for all Canadians. In fact, we had our lowest rates of fraud since 2013. <\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Recognized<\/span><\/b> as <\/span><\/b>a leader in trust and leadership in 2020<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

Trust is a key priority for our business, one we hold at the core of everything we do. That\u2019s one of the reasons we\u2019re chosen 18 million times a day to pay and move money. In 2020, <\/span>Interac<\/span> Corp. was recognized as one of the <\/span>most trusted brands in Canada<\/span><\/a> by <\/span>The <\/span>Gustavson<\/span> Brand Trust Index (GBTI)<\/span><\/a>, presented by the Peter B. <\/span>Gustavson<\/span> School of Business at the University of Victoria. <\/span>Interac<\/span> tied for the #1 most trusted financial services brand and this was the sixth consecutive year we topped the list. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, GBTI conducted a follow-up study of Canadian consumers to evaluate whether or not the level of trust they had with brands changed during the pandemic. In the follow-up report, <\/span>Interac<\/span><\/b> was rated the 7th most trusted brand in Canada.<\/span><\/b> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Focused on the future<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us a lot about consumer <\/span>behaviour<\/span> and the future of digital payments in Canada. Throughout 2020, we saw an <\/span>accelerated shift to digital <\/span>payment <\/span>options<\/span><\/a> and we don\u2019t anticipate this transition slowing down.<\/span> In <\/span>2021, and the years ahead, we\u2019re excited to continue to innovate for the future and find new ways to make it easier for Canadians to move their money safely and securely.<\/span><\/p>\n
