With<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/content\/news\/eight-in-10-canadians-facing-fraud-fatigue-while-risky-digital-behaviours-mount\/\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/content\/news\/control-is-top-of-mind-for-canadians-when-it-comes-to-online-personal-information-according-to-new-data-privacy-week-poll\/\">eight in ten (76 per cent) Canadians worried about protecting their online privacy and seven in 10 (74 per cent) wanting more control over their online information<\/a> now is to be proactive about safeguarding your data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hackers will often use what they can learn about you online to guess weak passwords and cyber security questions. They will also try to trick you into sharing sensitive information to break into your email and online accounts. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/content\/life\/digital-self-care-stay-safe-online-with-the-ultimate-cyber-security-checkup\/\">Knowing what to watch out for<\/a> is key to making this as hard for them as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep yourself safe online. Watch this helpful video and read on for tips to avoid falling prey to digital fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ygkmkSNzr0o?rel=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-protect-your-data-from-phishing-scams-and-identity-theft\">Protect your data from phishing scams and identity theft<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are seven essential tips to help protect you and your information from email fraud and digital scams:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Always\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/content\/life\/email-fraud-how-to-recognize-it-and-how-to-protect-yourself\/\">be careful of emails and websites<\/a>\u00a0that request your personal or financial information. Look closely at web addresses and never send passwords or sensitive personal financial information over email or text.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trust your instincts and don\u2019t let logos fool you. If anything feels suspicious, don\u2019t click on any links. Remember, anyone can copy and paste a company logo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you receive a notification for a transfer or money request you weren\u2019t expecting, contact the sender on a different channel to check if it\u2019s real.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/content\/ideas\/protecting-you-and-your-digital-self\/\">Create strong passwords and make sure you aren\u2019t duplicating them across accounts<\/a>. According to experts, it\u2019s most secure to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/content\/life\/why-you-should-try-to-have-canadas-ugliest-password\/\">create a password that looks \u201cugly\u201d<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 this means including a mix of special characters and using numbers in place of letters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When receiving money online, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/content\/life\/three-reasons-to-set-up-interac-e-transfer-autodeposit-today\/\">consider using <em>Interac<\/em> e-Transfer Autodeposit<\/a>, which deposits funds directly into your account \u2013 without the need for security questions and answers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you aren\u2019t using<em> Interac <\/em>e-Transfer Autodeposit when sending or receiving a payment: choose security questions and answers that won\u2019t be easy or obvious for a fraudster to guess.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/consumers\/products\/interac-verification-solutions\/\"><em>Interac <\/em>verification service<\/a> to authenticate yourself and access services online. This is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/content\/news\/interac-enables-secure-digital-transactions-with-the-launch-of-interac-verified\/\">secure and convenient way to verify your data and sign-in to online services<\/a> without having to create and manage a new user ID and password.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be conscious of the information you share online and how that can unintentionally help someone hack into your accounts. Hackers will try to guess or steal passwords and other sensitive personal data by using what they can learn about you online.
