Interac welcomes measures outlined in the Government of Canada’s Budget 2026: Masters of our Destiny<\/a><\/em> to strengthen Canadian economic sovereignty, improve productivity and affordability, and build a more competitive and resilient economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The federal government’s commitment to launch the next phase of payments modernization, including a public consultation in early 2027, is a particularly welcome step toward a more coordinated approach. The government’s Plan for a Stronger Canada<\/em><\/a> recognizes secure access to payment systems as essential to Canadian sovereignty. Through Catalyzing Canada<\/em><\/a>, our 2026 pre-budget submission, and sustained engagement with government and industry, Interac has called for that recognition to be translated into a government led national payments strategy. That strategy should bring together work underway across payments, digital finance, fraud prevention and identity, aligning it around clear priorities, accountabilities and timelines. It should ensure Canada retains meaningful control over the infrastructure, data and decision-making that move money, while fostering an open and robust ecosystem that supports affordability, trust and innovation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The launch of the Real-Time Rail (RTR) marks another important milestone. Interac is proud to serve as the RTR’s exchange solution provider, drawing on more than four decades of operating trusted Canadian payments infrastructure, including the technology behind Interac e-Transfer. We look forward to continuing our work with Payments Canada, government, regulators and industry to deliver a secure, resilient system that creates real value for Canadians and businesses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Budget 2026 also advances measures Interac has long supported. Amendments to the Canada Revenue Agency Act<\/em> would enable an income verification service that could make mortgage processes more efficient, reduce reliance on paper documents and help prevent fraud. The Multi-Sector Anti-Fraud Framework, National Anti-Fraud Strategy and Financial Crimes Agency reflect the prevention-first, cross-sector response needed to stop fraud earlier. The voluntary digital-credential pilot in financial services is a meaningful step toward interoperable, privacy-preserving credentials that let Canadians verify information without repeatedly sharing sensitive documents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As consumer-driven banking and Canada’s stablecoin framework move forward, consistent standards for security, liability, consumer protection and recourse will be essential so that innovation expands choice without compromising trust. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
