But for a tourist arriving by ferry, a skier hopping between villages, or a first-time rider without exact change, it usually requires a little extra planning. So BC Transit, one of Canada&#8217;s largest public transit providers, is changing lanes by rolling out open payments across more than 30 transit systems to make it easier for riders to travel throughout British Columbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By bringing Interac Debit into the mix, BC Transit was able to make boarding feel more intuitive right from the start. The result? Riders can now tap their debit card and go. No transit app or card. No change required.<br><br>We sat down with Ryan Dennis,&nbsp; Director, Strategy and Growth at BC Transit, to talk about their transition to open payments, what it takes to modernize fare payments across an entire transit network, and why the future of transit could already be sitting in people&#8217;s wallets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-all-aboard-the-easier-way-to-pay\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">All Aboard the Easier Way to Pay<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For BC Transit, using open payments was never just about introducing new technology. It was about giving riders more flexibility and making transit easier to access for both frequent and occasional users, especially for those arriving unprepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We see a large number of <a>Canadians<\/a> who come to our communities who land somewhere or they get off a ferry or they&#8217;re here on a cruise and they don&#8217;t have change, they don&#8217;t have an app downloaded, they don&#8217;t know where to get a card,&#8221; says Dennis. &#8220;Interac Debit is really reducing barriers for those people.&#8221;<br><br>It\u2019s a small change in behaviour that can make a big difference in accessibility, especially for people using the system for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-scaling-up-without-slowing-down\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scaling Up Without Slowing Down<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coordinating an open payments rollout across more than 30 transit systems, 1,000-plus buses, and multiple technology partners was no small feat. BC Transit had been planning for this moment since it launched its closed-looped platform with Umo in 2023, making open payments the natural next phase of a modernization effort years in the making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project required a full procurement process, phased configuration, and working through first-of-its-kind technical challenges alongside technology partner Umo. Watching what neighbouring agencies like TransLink had done, and the evolution of transit fare payments, helped shape BC Transit&#8217;s approach at every turn. And one thing was clear: Interac Debit was coming along for the ride. &#8220;We were really firm in terms of what our needs and expectations were,&#8221; says Dennis. &#8220;We wanted to be able to say we&#8217;re launching Interac Debit at the same time as credit when we turn open payments on.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-interac-debit-kept-the-experience-on-track\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interac Debit Kept the Experience on Track<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the beginning, BC Transit knew everyday payment habits needed to be part of the experience. And because about 98% of Canadians already use Interac Debit for everyday purchases*, riders could pay for transit the same way they pay for so many other things, making open payments feel more natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Interac working with Umo on the technical considerations, along with guidance from Interac on the nuances of open payments and building customer-facing materials, BC Transit was able to roll it out smoothly. All while minimizing disruption behind the scenes. \u201cWe\u2019ve been pleased with what we\u2019ve seen,\u201d says Dennis. \u201cFrom the rider\u2019s perspective, it\u2019s been working great. It\u2019s been there, it\u2019s been seamless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-whistler-blew-the-doors-off-expectations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Whistler Blew the Doors Off Expectations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soft launch in Whistler quickly told BC Transit everything they needed to know about what people wanted. Adoption came in at 4-5 times the industry average, driven largely by the kind of rider open payments was designed for: riders who just want to tap and go (which include a lot of Whistler\u2019s visitors). &#8220;We heard it from operators,&#8221; says Dennis. &#8220;People who would take the wrong run, end up down at the base of a different chair, and need to take the bus to get back\u2014and they didn&#8217;t have something available. Being able to tell them they can pay with their Interac Debit card, that&#8217;s an opportunity.&#8221;<br><br>BC Transit also saw a meaningful decrease in cash payments during the soft launch, offset by growth in open loop transactions. Riders who used to slip through the cracks were starting to tap on in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-this-is-just-the-beginning-of-the-line\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">This is Just the Beginning of the Line<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interac Debit isn&#8217;t just a payment method. For BC Transit, it was the key to unlocking a whole new kind of rider. And the system will play different roles across different communities. In larger systems, the opportunity is to catch the infrequent or first-time rider and grow them into a regular. In smaller systems that are mostly still cash-dependent, the story is simpler. If you have an Interac Debit card, you have bus fare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I feel like there&#8217;s a large need that&#8217;s not being met because people aren&#8217;t taking transit as a result of not feeling like they have something they can pay with,&#8221; says Dennis. &#8220;Where that opportunity lies is something we&#8217;re still working to understand, and that&#8217;s what makes it exciting.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For other transit authorities weighing the move, BC Transit&#8217;s experience offers one clear lesson: know what you want and build for it right from the start.
