I believe that transformation is changing lives for the better and will continue to create prosperity for generations to come.

But as Dr. Wendy Wong and I discussed in the latest conversation for Everyday Trust, living a digital life also entails leaving behind a trail of data. And if people don’t trust what’s being done with it, that skepticism can harden into backlash and eventually disengagement from digital platforms. That presents a risk for our economic progress. As questions about foreign control of data infrastructure move from abstract policy debates into everyday Canadian conversation, the stakes of getting “datafication” right have never felt more immediate.

The datafication of our daily existence is a terrific subject for Everyday Trust, a series of conversations I hold with leading thinkers about the role of trust in a rapidly changing technology landscape. (Because without trust, people won’t adopt and use the emerging technologies that can deliver digital prosperity.)

Wendy is a professor of political science and the Principal’s Research Chair at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan. She holds a Ph.D in Political Science from the University of California, San Diego. Her research focuses on global governance, emerging technologies and how data shapes autonomy, equality and justice — as you can read about in her Balsillie Prize-winning book, We, the Data: Human Rights in a Digital Age.

Here are the big takeaways from our talk about the datafication of daily life. (And as always, you can also watch our full conversation.)

1. That means “almost every one of our decisions, our actions — even to some extent just our thoughts and our values — are being reflected in the digital world.”

Once generated, that data takes on a life of its own. Data sets, Wendy continued, are “being traded and sold and repackaged for other reasons, which makes them relatively immortal compared to our flesh-and-blood selves. Data can go on forever.”

Some people are unaware of this continuous creation of data, while for others it could engender mistrust and suspicion around new technologies. At Interac, we know this data collection and privacy can be a source of concern for many Canadians. As an example, Wendy and I talked about how a simple thing like installing a digital doorbell generates data. That’s not necessarily a nefarious thing, Wendy noted, but it could be unsettling for some.

In short, most people experience digital systems as seamless and intuitive — that’s how they’re designed when they’re designed well. But the simplicity of the interface can mask how much is really happening under the surface, including the collection of data.

2. Trust is vulnerable in a digital age

We often use the word “trust” as a term to describe feelings of safety and reassurance. We know a lot of people have lost trust in established institutions as well as new digital experiences and services. For many Canadians, figuring out whom and what to trust is an everyday challenge.

Wendy also pointed out how the vast array of choices in a connected global marketplace can be a source of mistrust. In a world of “many brands, many alternatives,” it can take some time for people to figure out which entities are trustworthy.

“We’ve become unmoored from the comfort and the reliance on expertise or established institutions,” Wendy said. “Which is not to say that that’s a bad thing, but it certainly does introduce a lot of uncertainty.”

3. We’re seeing Big Tech playing a government-like role

The networks and the major platform companies often now define how we access information, how we pay, how we verify ourselves and generally how we interact digitally. The design choices of these large companies are quietly shaping our behaviour and the rules that are embedded within those systems.

Said Wendy, “Through technological advance and through social and political change, there are actors out there that actually perhaps govern us even more intensively, and more on a second-to-second basis, than any government could — because of how much we use platforms in our lives, because of how datafied our lives have become.”

Acting as a major player in a digital economy means being a steward of data, in other words. It means thinking carefully about the rights that people should enjoy around how their data is created and handled. It’s a serious responsibility, and one we take seriously at Interac.

Entities that don’t invest in this thinking risk the erosion of trust. People might still use their systems, but feel more and more uneasy about it over time.

4. Digital sovereignty means keeping data in Canadian hands

The concentration of data power in a small number of platforms is not just a governance challenge. And digital sovereignty, I’d argue, shouldn’t be treated as an abstract policy question because it shows up in practically everything we do. It shows up in who controls our identity systems, who governs our data flows and who owns the rails that our financial systems run on.

For my part, I’ve been thinking about the concentration of power in entities that reside outside of Canada as a turning point for our digital sovereignty. I believe it’s critical to retain domestic control over the gears that make our economy turn. If Canada doesn’t take digital sovereignty seriously, we risk losing more than just technical capabilities. We risk losing control of some of the core things that are precious to us.

And if those foundational elements sit in foreign hands, it means our data resides elsewhere — and the associated economic activity is too. That’s a challenge not just for sovereignty, but for Canadian prosperity.

Because ultimately, this isn’t just about the solutions — it’s about Canadian values. It’s our values that are enshrined in those systems. And sovereignty, trust and prosperity are all interconnected: a country that doesn’t control a digital backbone can’t fully control its future.

Being 100 per cent Canadian is a point of pride for us at Interac. We’re one of the few thriving domestic financial services ecosystems around the world. We like to describe our capabilities as “by Canadians. For Canadians.”

5. Growth is compatible with Canadian values

I closed by asking Wendy how responsible datafication would look, in an ideal world. Her answer centred on preserving what matters most: autonomy, equality and community — not as static ideals, but as fluid principles for a world in which the digital and the analog are increasingly inseparable.

Getting datafication right, as we both agreed, isn’t just about deploying better technology. “What’s easy is not always right, and what’s right is not always easy, and we have to figure out the balance of that,” Wendy said.

Ultimately, I think our responses to the questions around datafication are going to be built on Canadian values like sovereignty, equity, trust and prosperity. And to be honest, while the questions around datafication are challenging, I’m bullish on our ability to resolve them in a way that’s fair and right for Canada. After all, we have a legacy of creating systems that shape our economic resilience and build our long-term prosperity — while preserving Canadian values and creating opportunity for all Canadians.

Want to listen to Everyday Trust?
