Despite coming of age amidst economic uncertainty, Gen Z\u2019s buying power is growing at a faster rate than any other generation, according to a 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/nielseniq.com\/global\/en\/landing-page\/spend-z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NielsenIQ<\/a> study.\u00a0The companies that thrive will be the ones that meet Gen Z\u2019s needs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This emphasis on listening to the voices of Canadian youth is at the heart of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/en\/content\/youth-council-at-interac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Interac Youth Council<\/a>, which just marked its first year of conversations and collaboration. They told us in their own words.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-council-participants\">Council Participants\u00a0<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Amy Xia, <em>Ex-Officio Member<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breezy Prabahar, <em>Co-Chair\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Falhada Farah\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Feknous, <em>Secretary\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Justin Langan\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nabil Anouti, <em>Co-Chair\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oleksandr (Alex) Zhoravovych, <em>Communications Officer\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Precious Uzoh<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Warner Schaettgen\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-power-and-potential-of-diverse-voices\">The power and potential of diverse voices\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the board, Youth Council participants highlighted how the experience nurtured authentic, diverse dialogue that\u2019s already driving more inclusive outcomes in terms of innovation and product development at Interac.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interac products are a part of daily life in Canada, and the company recognizes its unique role in creating products that serve all Canadians\u2014coast \u2013to \u2013coast \u2013to coast. Programs like the Youth Council help Interac better understand some of the challenges Canadians are facing and how Interac can play a greater role in supporting them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Youth Council\u2019s participants demonstrated a strong commitment to making \u201cthe financial ecosystem more inclusive of future generations&#8217; needs,\u201d Craig noted. Evelina concurred, citing \u201chow engaged and thoughtful these young participants were when it came to their finances.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was truly surprised by the significant impact of personal cultural backgrounds, life stories, and unique perspectives on our shared concepts,\u201d Falhada shared.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building on Falhada&#8217;s reflection on the impact of individual perspectives, Zamir noted a similar diversity in how young people develop their financial literacy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cApproaches to financial literacy and confidence vary significantly among youth,\u201d observed Zamir. \u201cI was surprised to learn how some of them spend their time and attention, particularly in discovering and utilizing new information and tools to build their financial confidence.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"1024\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2025\/02\/image-2-602x1024.png.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-175810 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2025\/02\/image-2-602x1024.png.webp 602w, https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2025\/02\/image-2-176x300.png.webp 176w, https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2025\/02\/image-2-768x1307.png.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2025\/02\/image-2-902x1536.png.webp 902w, https:\/\/www.interac.ca\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2025\/02\/image-2.png.webp 940w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 602px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 602\/1024;\" data-original-sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-possibilities-for-what-could-be\">\u2018New possibilities\u2019 for \u2018what could be\u2019\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the participants said the work allowed them to imagine new, bold goals for their own futures, from taking on leadership roles, to driving change in their communities, to embracing the power of their own voices.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorking alongside a diverse and driven team allowed me to see new possibilities for growth and leadership,\u201d Alex shared. \u201cIt deepened my commitment to creating impactful, people-centred solutions and inspired me to pursue opportunities where I can actively contribute to meaningful change. I now feel even more motivated to develop my skills in ways that will empower me to make a positive impact in my career and community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Alex emphasized the impact of the experience on his leadership development, Warner focused on the broadened career horizons it provided.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeeing some future career possibilities and pathways, and interacting with professionals, allowed me to gain an understanding of what could be in my future,\u201d Warner reflected.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evalina stressed how impressed she was with the participants\u2019 engagement and approach to their finances and long-term goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven in their teens, some are already thinking far into the future, trying to understand where they are situated, and exploring opportunities to get ahead through means like investments,\u201d she said. \u201cNot only are they motivated to put themselves in a strong financial position, they are proactive in seeking out new information and carefully considering it from different angles.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Falhada said the experience had a profound impact on her, making her more motivated and more determined to drive meaningful change.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201csense of mutual respect and encouragement reinforced my belief in the power of my opinions, ideas, and perspectives to be heard loud and clear,\u201d she stated. \u201cThe Interac Youth Council not only helped prepare me for the future but also empowered me to take charge and actively shape it with purpose.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-innovation-at-interac-challenging-conventional-thinking\">Innovation at Interac: \u2018Challenging conventional thinking\u2019\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the key goals for the first year of the Youth Council was to help inform how Interac meets the needs of Canada\u2019s changing population with its products and processes. And it all starts with innovation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInnovation to me is about finding fresh solutions to existing problems and challenging conventional thinking, to enhance the way we live, work, and interact with the world,\u201d Winnie shared.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInnovation means driving progress with people at the heart of every effort,\u201d Alex stated. \u201cIt\u2019s about creating solutions that enrich lives and uplift communities, making the world more accessible, efficient, and equitable for everyone. True innovation serves the greater good, transforming challenges into opportunities and continuously pushing us forward.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This spirit\u2014and passion\u2014of innovation was infused throughout the council\u2019s assemblies and discussions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInnovation means the passion and search for new horizons,\u201d Warner explained. \u201cInnovation means risk and taking a chance on yourself and those around you. The learnings from each assembly will be directly translated into actionable insights, giving Interac the flexibility to build, design, and validate alongside a diverse group of people throughout the process.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Craig noted that \u201cthe insights gained from the program have helped Interac e-Transfer product teams understand our customers better and design with them in mind, leading to a more people-first development and business perspective.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gen Z is a key audience, so hearing from some of them firsthand was incredibly informative in \u201cunderstanding what resonates with this cohort and how to reach them,\u201d noted Evalina. (Case in point: rumor has it that the word \u201cdelulu\u201d was used repeatedly during discussions, to the bafflement of some of the Millennials present and the amusement of all.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the opportunity to learn some new slang, the experience provided Interac with a deeper empathy for and understanding of some of the challenges facing young Canadians. This will directly inform solution design and development.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTheir insights will play a crucial role in shaping how Interac develops and markets its products,\u201d Zamir explained, \u201censuring they remain relevant and inclusive for younger demographics.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking ahead, the continued collaboration between Interac and the members of the Youth Council will be important in navigating the evolving financial landscape and addressing the needs of future generations.
