The Inter-Member Network

Getting connected to the network

Every Interac Association member is responsible for the technology infrastructure to connect to the Inter-Member Network and must receive Interac Association approval.

Once your system has been installed and tested, the software must certify your systems. You will be required to follow a process called Direct Connector Implementation, where your system is tested to ensure other members within the Inter-Member Network can recognize it.

Indirect Connectors go through a smaller process and are certified by a Direct Connector.

Where members become part of a network

The Inter-Member Network (IMN) was designed using a "distributed architecture" and redundant telecommunications facilities that link Financial Institutions and Direct Connectors.

There is no single point of failure making it virtually impossible for the entire system to shut down.

How it works
Indirect Connectors interface to Direct Connectors to send and receive financial transactions. When an Interac Cash or Interac Debit transaction occurs a settlement obligation is created between the cardholder's financial institution and the Acquirer that operates the Automated Banking Machine or debit terminal.
