INTERAC® Reveals the Year’s Busiest Shopping Day

Canadians Used their Debit Cards 15.9 Million Times on December 23rd, 2008

December 28, 2008, Toronto (Ontario) – INTERAC® Canada’s national debit service and favourite way to pay revealed today that December 23rd was INTERAC’s busiest shopping day of the year with more than 15.9 million INTERAC transactions.

According to INTERAC, that represents an increase over the 15.6 million transactions reported on December 21st, 2007, last season’s busiest holiday shopping day of the year. INTERAC statistics show that Canadians also power-shopped during the final 2008 pre-holiday period, swiping their cards nearly 40 million times between December 21st and December 23rd.

“Canadians are among the highest users of debit compared to other countries around the world,” said Caroline Hubberstey, Director of Public and Government Affairs at Interac Association. “At the store, online, or at the ABM, your money is always with you – that’s why Canadians choose INTERAC as their preferred method of payment.”
